Four BWH Faculty Elected to IOM
Four BWH faculty this month were elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the prestigious national body that advises the president and Congress on health care and science issues.
Graham A. Colditz, MD, DrPH, epidemiologist, Department of Medicine; Elazer R. Edelman, MD, PhD, cardiologist, Cardiovascular Division; Stephen J. Elledge, PhD, investigator, Department of Medicine; and Joseph Loscalzo, MD, PhD, chair, Department of Medicine, were among 65 new members elected this year, raising the institute’s total active membership to more than 1,500.
“It is a great pleasure to welcome these distinguished and influential individuals to the Institute of Medicine,” IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg said. “Members are elected through a highly selective process that recognizes people who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health.”
Barbara Bierer, MD, BWH’s senior vice president of Research, said, “This truly is an honor and a testament to the rich diversity of research specialties we have here at the Brigham.”
The IOM was established in 1970 by the National Academy of Sciences to provide scientific, evidence-based answers to questions relevant to national health topics. Colditz, Edelman, Elledge and Loscalzo were selected by active members for their outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service and national health policy management.
