New Office Dedicated to Postdoctoral and Research Career Development
To help ensure the appropriate training and support of postdoctoral fellows, BWH created the Office for Postdoctoral Careers (OPC) within the newly formed Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. The center also encompasses the existing Office for Women’s Careers, directed by Carol Nadelson, MD, and the new Office for Minority Careers.
Caroline Rotondi, administrative director for the Office for Postdoctoral Careers, said, “We are a resource center for postdoctoral fellows, with the goal of improving their training experience while building a sense of community for them at BWH. Our goal is to help fellows make the transition to independent scientific investigator. Among other efforts, we will develop tools to foster mentoring, enhance fellowship orientation materials and establish a mechanism for grievances.”
The office’s short-term goals include:
•Offer workshops, seminars and networking events
•Define research categories of employment and training
•Develop standard policies for employment and benefits
•Establish working relationships with area postdoctoral offices
Longer-term goals include organizing career fairs, offering management training, designing exit surveys for postdoctoral fellows, implementing formal mentoring programs and developing an alumni network.
