BWH Bulletin's year-end issue is a time to highlight BWHers' proudest moments from the past year. We asked you to share one BWH-related memory from 2014 that was meaningful to you, and you offered touching stories about colleagues, patients, families, events and milestones that inspired you. We hope you enjoy these moments.
One Patient's Memorable Experience
For more than five years, I've sat in the front row for approximately 80 noontime interfaith worship services in the BWH Chapel. Over these years, my love and faith for God have grown deeper, closer and more trusting. The Chapel service is always a wonderful 15 minutes of reassurance of my truth. I love that through each service, my love, respect and admiration have grown for each BWH chaplain who has led it. I recently decided that I wanted to walk in their blessed shoes.
Earlier this month, I spoke with Chaplain Cheryl McDevitt about the possibility of co-leading a noon service. On Dec. 11, I became the first patient to lead a Chapel service, alongside Chaplain Susan Sullivan and with the help of Laurie Bittmann, of Chaplaincy Services. With support from the staff and all who were in attendance, this was a happy, tear-jerking and surprising experience. How could I ever thank them, or put into earthly words, the gratitude I felt by having Leah Frain, Ahmet Uluer, MD, and Simona Rits, of BWH's Pulmonary Division; Isabel Bailey, of Children's Hospital; Daphnee Souvenir, RN, nurse-in-charge of Tower 14CD; and Patricia Aylward, MS, RN, nurse director of 14CD; there to support me? Leading this service with so many BWH staff by my side was such a radiant and happy experience.
Thanks again to those who made my one shining moment perfect!
