BWH Bulletin's year-end issue is a time to highlight BWHers' proudest moments from the past year. We asked you to share one BWH-related memory from 2014 that was meaningful to you, and you offered touching stories about colleagues, patients, families, events and milestones that inspired you. We hope you enjoy these moments.
Coming Together to Provide Care
I have been a nurse in the Brigham and Women's Operating Room for close to 33 years, and every case I participate in or patient I care for is something close to a miracle, but not so much as this one young mother of three.
Ms. D presented with a serious pulmonary condition, and I was called to send a team to help anesthesiologist David Silver, MD, place the patient on ECMO (a device that would help her breathe), as her lungs were failing. Ms. D never lost hope, and all of her nurses and ancillary staff helped motivate her to maintain that attitude.
Several months into her admission, a lung donor became available. Her physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and others did everything possible to provide the very best care before, during and after her lung transplant.
Today, by Mrs. D's sheer will and tenacity (as well as help from her extended care team), she is home for Christmas with her three children and husband. So this was not only my shining moment, but everyone's from Environmental Services to Food Services to the physicians and nurses. This is what keeps me coming to work and proud to be a BWHer.
