BWH Bulletin's year-end issue is a time to highlight BWHers' proudest moments from the past year. We asked you to share one BWH-related memory from 2014 that was meaningful to you, and you offered touching stories about colleagues, patients, families, events and milestones that inspired you. We hope you enjoy these moments.
Community Connections
I am a primary care internist at Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center (SJPHC), and I run a program called "Comunidad En Accion" for Spanish-speaking patients with pre-diabetes and diabetes.
The program has been going on for two years, under the sponsorship of the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers for the first year and TripAdvisor for the second. TripAdvisor recently awarded a grant to continue the program for three more years.
We have 138 active participants in the program and an average of 31 patients every week. We often receive notes of thanks from participants, saying how much the program has improved their lives and well-being.
I received this message from one of the participants after our recent Thanksgiving celebration:
"It was a very nice lunch, not only because of the food, but because of what we got to hear from fellow patients. We felt impacted by their testimonies; we felt like we got to know them more."
Reading this was very emotional for the team and me, and it makes me very proud to be a BWH SJPHC provider.
