Baron, Ukomadu, Perrella Receive ASCI/AAP Awards, Appointments
Rebecca M. Baron, MD, Pulmonary Division, and Chinweike Ukomadu, MD, PhD, Department of Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology Division, received Travel Awards from the American Society for Clinical Investigation/Association of American Physicians (ASCI/AAP).
The Travel Awards are presented to physician scientists who hold a National Institute of Health Mentored Scientist Award to encourage young investigators to attend and present their ongoing research projects. Baron and Ukomadu joined other award recipients in presenting research posters at the April ASCI/AAP joint meeting in Chicago.
Baron and Ukomadu also received ASCI/AAP Stanley J. Korsmeyer Young Investigator Awards for best posters for their research. Theirs were two of three posters chosen from more than 130. Baron’s research addresses the regulation of nitric oxide production in mouse models of sepsis and lung injury, with the ultimate goal of using gene transcription tools to modulate the inflammatory response during critical illness. Ukomadu’s research focuses on the molecular mechanisms that control the initiation of liver regeneration.
In addition, Mark Perrella, MD, Pulmonary and Critial Care Division, in April was elected into the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI).
The ASCI was founded in 1908 and is one of the nation’s oldest medical honor societies, with more than 2,800 physician-scientists recognized for their scholarly achievement in biomedical research.
