Griffin Honored for RESOLVE Efforts
Martha Griffin, PhD, RN, CS, of the Float Pool, in December was honored for her role in creating and supporting legislation in Massachusetts that mandates private health insurance plans pay for infertility treatments.
RESOLVE of the Bay State, Inc., the Massachusetts Chapter of RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association, celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Infertility Insurance Mandate by honoring the original volunteers and lawmakers who passed the law, including then Gov. Michael S. Dukakis.
Griffin was instrumental in crafting this legislation and lobbied to get it passed in Massachusetts, making the Bay State one of the few states in the country to ensure its health insurers cover infertility treatments. As a result, it is estimated that between 40,000 and 60,000 babies have been born through infertility treatment.
“The event will rank as one the proudest moments of my gubernatorial career, although at the time I never could have foreseen the tremendous impact it would have on the lives of Massachusetts residents,” Dukakis wrote in a letter about the event.
RESOLVE of the Bay State continues to provide support, education and advocacy programs. It continues to advocate with the legislature to expand coverage and cover new reproductive techniques.
Griffin also ranks the creation of this legislation as one of the proudest achievements of her nursing career.
