Nomination forms for the second annual Dennis J. Thomson Leadership Award will be available beginning in October and this year’s recipient will be announced in January 2001. The recognition was created last year to cultivate and reinforce the traits of exemplary leadership at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Named after the late vice president of Public Affairs, the honor celebrates the essential characteristics of leadership, including character, competency, composure, commitment, courage and care for people. The recipient will be recognized at an award ceremony and will receive reimbursement of up to $1,000 to attend any leadership skills building conference. In addition, the hospital will donate $1,000 to the Dennis J. Thomson Fund to support compassionate care at BWH. Thomson came to BWH in 1991 as the director of Public Affairs and was later promoted to vice president. He was well known for his compassion, courage and character. Thomson lost his brief battle with cancer in 1998. Last year’s recipient was Maria Damiano, administrator, CDIC, who used the proceeds to take a leadership course as part of her post-graduate studies at Simmons College. Nomination forms for this year’s award will be available in the October 6 edition of Bulletin.
