Percipio Coming to BICS
Inpatient imaging ordering will take on a new look and updated functionality as BWH add Percipio to our in-patient order entry system in February. A change that comes with a minimal interruption in workflow and significant gains in quality, communication and efficiency for all.
Percipio, the BWH paperless image-ordering application in place for outpatient practices since 2002, will launch within three to five seconds from BICS providing Radiology with a single process and infrastructure through which orders are received and developed. This provides direct communication from the ordering physician to the radiologist. In addition to efficiencies on the back end, ordering clinicians will benefit from Percipio’s decision-support features and ability to set up individual and department “shortcuts” for common orders. All imaging orders will need to be entered by physicians, medical students, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and midwives who are authorized to enter orders in Percipio. All imaging requests will need written orders. Nurses will not be able to enter orders.
“Percipio has proven to be an asset in ensuring accurate imaging orders in our outpatient setting as its built-in decision support greatly reduces unnecessary imaging tests,” said Rhamin Khorasani, MD, MPH, vice chair of Radiology and director of Medical Imaging Information Technology.
Pilot programs were underway in the Tower in the Surgical Intensive Unit and PACE unit on Tower 15 during the last week January, with hospital-wide implementation scheduled for Jan. 31. With this new application, BICS automatically will launch Percipio when a clinician inputs an imaging order. Percipio-based tests include x-ray, ultrasound, CT scans, Nuclear Medicine, mammography, Echo lab, vascular studies and stress tests. Orders for traditional EKGs remain in BICS.
Radiology encourages Percipio users to take advantage of an e-mail link to share feedback about this application. The department will use this feedback to review, assess, and prioritize ordering provider’s needs in Percipio.
