Urman Recognized for Research on MH
Richard Urman, MD, instructor in Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, in October received the Daniel Massik Award from the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States (MHAUS).
He was recognized for his paper “Malignant Hyperthermia, Anesthesia and Dexmedetomidine: A Safe Alternative in Three Challenging Patients,” which describes clinical experiences with dexmedetomidine. Through several case reports, the paper analyzes its effect in patients undergoing general anesthesia who have multiple medical problems, malignant hyperthermia precautions, difficult airways and allergies.
The award, which honors George Massik, one of the founding members of MHAUS, whose son died from complications of malignant hyperthermia (MH), is presented to an anesthesiologist to stimulate their research into MH.
