After spending two summers working at BWH through the Youth Summer Program, Lexington High School graduate Marcos Pimentel is on the fast-track to achieving his goal of becoming a registered nurse.
“Working alongside medical professionals during the last two summers taught me what it’s like to deliver the highest quality of care with a personal touch and what separates the average from the exceptional,” said Pimentel, who, upon matriculating at Anna Maria College this fall, will be the first in his family to go to college.
The BWH Youth Summer Program hosted its closing ceremony last month, recognizing the 96 students who participated and the departments that hosted them.
The event’s keynote speaker was Christian Arbelaez, MD, MPH, of the Department of Emergency Medicine, who shared with the students his path to becoming a physician, which started when his family moved from Colombia to the U.S. when he was very young. He told the students that he had also participated in a summer youth program in Texas that exposed him to the idea of a career in health care.
“You and I have a lot in common. We have participated in programs that believe in us and provided mentors who took the time to teach us new skills,” he said. “My charge to you today is to continue finding these types of opportunities, find those mentors and those people who believe in you, and that will help you in whatever career you choose to pursue. And as you push forward, remember to give back and take time to encourage those behind you.”
