Nutritionist Irene O’Hayer leads a group of women through a supermarket tour as part of “Know Your Numbers,” a cardiovascular wellness program.
Brookside Community Health Center patients are learning to lead healthier lives, thanks to “Know Your Numbers,” a grant-funded cardiovascular wellness program for Boston-area women diagnosed with or at risk of cardiovascular disease.
During the program, nine Brookside patients received lifestyle educational support including relaxation techniques and stress management. They also learned to fit exercise into their day and make healthy food choices.
“We were very pleased with the success of the program,” said Tory Hill, project coordinator. “We held pre-and post-tests, and the results show that women enrolled in the program became more aware of how to make healthier choices.”
As part of the program, Irene O’Hayer, the center’s nutritionist, led the women through a local supermarket, teaching them about food labels, portion sizes and selecting whole grains and other healthy options.
“In many instances, women have a lot of influence on what their families eat,” she said. “They have gained a great deal of knowledge this summer to bring back to their families.”
