The Summer Youth Program and MAFCU hosted a workshop for students on the basics of money management.
Not only are students gaining valuable work experience by participating in BWH’s Youth Summer Internship Program, but they are also learning the concepts of money management, credit, banking accounts and loans.
“I never thought of how to manage my money before because I usually give it to my parents to handle,” said Lisa Luo, a recent high school graduate who works in the Neurology department of BWH.
Luo was one of the Summer Youth Program students who attended a special workshop presented by MAFCU for students on the basics of money management. “One thing I learned was the difference between checking and savings accounts,” Luo said. “I didn’t really know about that before.”
Marcos Pimentel, another student who spent the summer working in the Operating Room, walked into the financial workshop with a general idea of how to manage his money, but found it to be very informative. “I had a lot of my questions answered about what credit was and how it is used,” he said.
A full-service financial cooperative, MAFCU is committed to providing its members and the surrounding community with financial knowledge to help people reach their financial goals through services, education and community involvement, like BWH’s summer program.
BWH’s Youth Summer Internship Program introduces high school students to dynamic careers in health care and helps them develop valuable work skills that they can apply to future work experiences.
“We do this, not just by the work experience they gain while interning here for six weeks, but also with a variety of workshops on different subjects important to students,” said Elizabete De Moura, youth coordinator for BWH.
Both Pimentel and Luo have found BWH’s summer program to be very helpful.
“I wanted to experience working in a hospital, and being part of the summer program is great. I’ve learned how to do office work and organize things like patient files,” said Luo.
Workshops like MAFCU’s and summer programs like BWH’s demonstrate how many students are taking their futures into their own hands. “I want to go into nursing and the summer program is helping me to see what nurses do and what I want to do,” said Pimentel.
