Allen Kachalia, MD, JD, was named associate chief quality officer in August.
“The creation of this new position is a testament to the hospital’s commitment to providing the highest quality of care in the safest environment for our patients and their families,” said David Bates, MD, senior vice president for Quality and Safety, who is working closely with Kachalia in the areas of quality, safety, infection control and performance improvement.
In addition, Kachalia and Tom Walsh, MBA, were recently appointed co-directors of the Center for Clinical Excellence.
In this capacity, they oversee the center’s work in the areas of quality, safety, financial and operational analysis, business planning, decision support, patient affordability and pay-for-performance, among other areas. They are working closely with Bates and BWH Chief Medical Officer Stan Ashley, MD.
“Together they will provide strong leadership for the center and help us continue delivering on the center’s mission to constantly improve quality, safety and efficiency of care at the Brigham,” said Bates.
Kachalia joined BWH as a hospitalist in 2003 and, over the last few years, has held leadership roles including associate medical director of the Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization and director of quality in the Department of Medicine. Since 2009, he has been medical director for Quality and Safety.
Walsh has served as director of analysis and planning in the Center for Clinical Excellence since 2007. He has been instrumental in the BW/F Patient Affordability efforts that are part of the hospital’s strategic planning work, and he will continue his leadership in this area. Prior to joining the Center for Clinical Excellence in 2005, he was a project manager in the process improvement department at Cambridge Health Alliance.
