Longtime BWH supporter Estrellita Karsh led Lachlan Forrow, MD, president of The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, on a tour last month of “Healers of Our Age,” a collection of Yousuf Karsh photographs along the Nesson Pike.
The collection includes a portrait of the late Albert Schweitzer taken in 1954, just two years after he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Karsh and Forrow paused in front of the photograph while Forrow explained Schweitzer’s emotional journey as he arrived at his philosophy of “reverence for life.”
Schweitzer founded his hospital in Gabon in 1913 to help meet the medical needs of Africans. Over the years, the hospital has grown, but the sign above the hospital door, “Here, at whatever hour you come, you will find light and help and human kindness,” continues to inspire today.
Established in 1940, the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship supports individuals who are dedicated to addressing the health needs of underserved communities.
Karsh’s “Healers of Our Age” collection on the Pike features medical and scientific luminaries, like Schweitzer. You can learn more about Karsh, one of the world’s most celebrated and accomplished portrait photographers, in “Karsh is History,” an award-winning film highlighting his life and career. Produced to commemorate his 100th birthday, the film re-airs on WGBH, Channel 2, Sept. 3 at 11 p.m. and Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
