A. John Popp, MD, FACS, chairman of BWH’s Department of Neurosurgery, was awarded the 2011 Cushing Medal by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) on April 12 in recognition of his many years of outstanding leadership, dedication and contributions to the field of neurosurgery.
The Harvey Cushing Medal, the most prestigious award the AANS can bestow upon a member, is given annually and recognizes an AANS member for distinguished service to the field of neurosurgery.
Popp served as AANS president from 2003 to 2004 and held other leadership positions within the organization, including vice president, editor-in-chief of the AANS Bulletin and chair of the AANS/CNS Washington Committee.
He currently serves as president of the World Academy of Neurological Surgeons, vice chair of the RRC for Neurological Surgery and governor of the American College of Surgeons. Previously, he was president of the Society of Neurological Surgeons and a member of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He has been an advisor for a National Science Foundation study on ethics and experimental design, a member of the Steering Committee for an AHCPR grant measuring and improving the quality of carotid endarterectomy, and the recipient of grants from the NIH for the study of neurogenic lung failure and traumatic injury to the central nervous system. He specializes in the treatment of brain tumors, vascular disease and degenerative spine and peripheral nerve disease.
