Claudie Lafrance of 14CD attends “Remembrance and Hope for Haiti;” Toni Kimble and Marie Gaston, both of the OR, read a prayer at the ceremony.
When members of the BWH community gathered in Bornstein Amphitheater Jan. 13 to commemorate the one year anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, they heard words of prayer and remembrance, and also a message of hope for the future.
“Remembrance and Hope for Haiti,” which was rescheduled because of the Jan. 12 blizzard, began with a welcome from Kathleen Gallivan, SND, PhD, director of Chaplaincy Services, and greetings from BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD.
“Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones or endured the tragedy that occurred one year ago,” Nabel said. “At the same time, this is an opportunity for us to think about and rejoice together at the spirit that has endured. Many of you reached out, selflessly, to your friends and colleagues. These demonstrations of hope, giving and the human connection speak volumes of the Brigham community, and it truly makes me proud to be a part of this family.”
In addition to hearing readings and prayers led by individuals from BWH’s Haitian community, the audience saw a slideshow of images illustrating the efforts that have gone into providing aid and rebuilding the Haitian communities and the ways in which members of the BWH community have contributed.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Jean-Ernst DuPont of the OR led the audience in an emotionally-charged rendition of the Haitian national anthem.
“Everyone here has shown such support for my country, and for the pain we still have,” said Berona Joseph of Materials Management, who attended the ceremony to support her friends and loved ones affected by the tragedy. “There are a lot of good hearts at the Brigham.”
