Thomas Thornhill, MD, was honored Nov. 22 with the 2010 Humanitarian Award in recognition of his work with Operation Walk Boston. The award is the highest honor bestowed by BWH’s Hippocrates Society, which is comprised of BWH physicians and scientists who make philanthropic gifts to the hospital.
As the founder and chief executive officer for Operation Walk Boston, Thornhill works with staff in BWH’s Department of Orthopedics, as well as volunteer health care providers from other Boston area hospitals, to improve the quality of life for impoverished patients through the direct and indirect delivery of orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation.
“It’s an honor to receive this award, which I share with my colleagues who have selflessly dedicated their time and talents to Operation Walk Boston,” Thornhill said. “Our reward is watching patients take their first steps after surgery—steps that symbolize a restored quality of life for these patients and their families.”
The program, which was established in 2007, provides free joint replacement and rehabilitation services to people around the world who would otherwise be unable to afford or receive such care. It also educates local health care providers in the delivery of surgical procedures and post-operative rehabilitation.
The Hippocrates Society, established in 2002, is a giving society for physicians who make significant philanthropic gifts to BWH and Faulkner Hospital.
