On a daily basis, people driving to BWH for treatment or to visit a loved one experience immense frustration before even setting foot in the lobby. They can’t find a place to park, adding to stress they may already be experiencing.
Employees can help by not taking up space in the ServiCenter Garage, which is the only self-park garage reserved for patients and visitors.
For each employee who parks in the garage for a shift, three patients or visitors are turned away. “We’re able to turn spots over three times a day for patients and visitors because they park for a few hours each,” said Robert Chicarello, director of Security and Parking. “There are other options for parking for employees; turning patients away from the garage just isn’t what the Brigham is about.”
Patient/Family Relations often receives complaints about how the lack of parking affects the overall experience of patients and visitors at the hospital.
“Patients are frustrated and they arrive late for their appointments because they’ve had to drive around waiting for a spot to open up somewhere; many of them are elderly and have an especially stressful time doing so,” said practice manager Kristen Koch. “It really affects patient care.”
BWH has space for about 5,500 employees to park in various lots and garages throughout the system, from Chestnut Hill to the Mission Park Garage on Vining Street. A work group has been convened to examine ways to improve the parking situation until the Mass Mental Center Redevelopment project, which includes an underground parking garage for BWH employees, is complete.
