As a tradition, BWH decorates for the holiday season each year with simple public displays.
“Our holiday season is both cultural and religious, and we celebrate with a variety of symbols, some secular and some religious,” said Kathleen Gallivan, PhD, director of Chaplaincy Services. “Since we’re a diverse community of many cultures and religions, we like to acknowledge the holiday season with simple displays.”
The hospital traditionally puts up holiday trees the week after Thanksgiving, and other decorations according to religious tradition. This year, BWH will set up displays on the following dates:
•A nativity scene donated by the Friends of BWH in the 75 Francis St. lobby Dec. 15 - Jan. 2
•Menorahs donated by the Friends of BWH in the lobbies at 75 and 15 Francis St. Dec. 15 - Dec. 26
•Holiday trees and poinsettias in the lobbies at 75, 45 and 15 Francis St. and the Connors Center lobby Nov. 24 - Jan. 5
•Lighting of the trees outside at 15 Francis St. Nov. 24 – Jan 5
•A display acknowledging Kwanzaa outside the Chapel
During the holiday season, Chaplaincy brings electric menorahs to any Jewish patients who wish to have them. “We try to support the religious preference of patients all year long, whether it’s by bringing them Shabbat candles, rosaries or prayer cards,” Gallivan said.
Last month, members of Chaplaincy and the Muslim community at BWH celebrated Iftar, a breaking of the day’s fast during Ramadan.
