Longtime BWH supporters Frederic and Jean Sharf last month received the 2006 Heritage Society Award for their exceptional, lasting contributions to the hospital.
"For more than 20 years, Fred and Jean have supported the hospital in all areas of its mission—patient care, education and research," BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, told the donors, trustees and hospital leaders gathered at the annual Heritage Society Event at the Four Seasons Hotel. "They understand the vision and promise of BWH."
Jean Sharf serves as a member of the Women's Health Leadership Council, and Fred Sharf is a founding member of the BWH Trust Board. He inspired the creation of the Hippocrates Society, which honors physicians who make significant gifts to the hospital. In addition, the Sharfs have helped hospital leaders increase BWH's visibility in Palm Beach.
They also have made significant donations to BWH in support of internal medicine graduate education and cardiac surgery research. They made an especially strong impact with their multifaceted gift to revamp patient admitting in 2002. Each day, nearly 100 patients pass through the Jean S. and Frederic A. Sharf Admitting Center, a welcoming space complete with rotating art exhibits from the Sharfs' personal collection.
"We all know that first impressions are lasting ones," Christine F. Collins, director of Patient Access Services, said. "Patients' first impressions of the hospital have been significantly enhanced by the Sharfs' generous gift. My first impression of Fred and Jean remains unchanged—they are gracious, kind and caring, and they go about their lives changing things for the better."
