BWHers are gearing up for the hospital's upcoming Joint Commission accreditation survey in several ways this year, including attending last week's Joint Commission Staff Readiness Fair, participating in the Joint Commission Family Feud Tournament and visiting BWHPikeNotes.org to stay up-to-date on the latest readiness tips and information.
"Our survey window is now open," said Kelly Schoppee, MS, RN, director of Clinical Compliance. "Surveyors can visit BWH unannounced anytime between now and February 2013."
To prepare, BWH Clinical Compliance hosted a readiness fair on Sept. 20 that drew hundreds of employees to the Cabot Atrium.
Many departments participated in the fair, including Pharmacy, BioMedical Engineering, Security, Human Resources and Infection Control. At each table, attendees could win prizes and access resources that will help them prepare for the survey.
Other readiness efforts are taking shape across the hospital. Some BWHers are finding a collegial and fun way to test their Joint Commission knowledge by participating in a Joint Commission Family Feud Tournament, which began last week.
In this 16-team tournament, employees from Ambulatory clinical areas are matched against each other to test their Joint Commission knowledge.During the first round, staff from the Watkins Clinic matched up against the Department of Surgery.
"It's a lot of fun to test how much we know and how ready we are," said Princess Welcome, a practice administrator from the Department of Surgery team, which won the match and will go on to compete in the next round.
"The feedback we received after the first two matches has been great," said Ryan Lafond, project specialist in Ambulatory Services, who is playing the part of game show host. "It's been a fun way for folks to get together as we prepare for the Joint Commission survey."
The tournament will continue through December, with teams representing Dermatology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology, Neurology, Emergency Services, Psychiatry and other specialties. The winning team will receive $500 to be put toward a departmental activity, plus bragging rights.
Continual readiness support is available 24 hours a day on BWHPikeNotes.org under the Employee & Staff Resource tab. Under Compliance & Risk Management, you can find an array of information, including a Q&A section, the 2012 National Patient Safety Goals and much more.
