In an effort to improve communication and enhance access to research and educational materials, BWH nurses are in the process of obtaining access to Microsoft Outlook. Scheduled for completion by the end of the year, all staff nurses will be equipped with personal outlook accounts and email and internet training.
“This has been a very quick and smooth process,” said Florence Lafferty, operations supervisor, who played an instrumental role in setting up the pilot program on the 8th floor of the Tower. “Our nurses have collaborated with each other to share advice on best practices and exchange ideas. There has been a tremendous amount of support and encouragement, and we have been fortunate to have the assistance of an enthusiastic Patient Care Services team.”
Prior to launching Outlook for nurses, Patient Care Services created pamphlets and educational materials. Additionally, they assigned a staff member to serve as an internet consultant, guiding the implementation process and assisting nurses who need further training.
“The positive response has been overwhelming,” said Lafferty. “Here on the 8th floor, the access to Outlook has improved our communication with nurses at Cape Cod Hospital. Something as simple as receiving and printing attachments has increased access to educational materials, new technology and expanded our ability to obtain research articles.”
The Outlook implementation will be rolled out to all nursing areas through December 2002. For more information, contact Leo Buckley, Jr., director, Business Services at ext. 2-6599.
