Last month, more than 200 people gathered for the eighth annual Connors Center for Women and Newborns Service of Remembrance. The event is an occasion to support families who have experienced perinatal loss.
“Our goal was to create an event that helps parents heal. I can truly say it has evolved into this beautiful program that provides healing to both parents and Brigham staff,” said Leslie Morette, RN, a Center for Labor and Birth nurse-in-charge and co-chair of the Connors Center Bereavement Committee, which hosts the event.
For the eighth year in a row, about 200 staff members, parents and children attended the event in Cabot Atrium—the largest turn-out since the event’s inception in 2003.
Families and BWH staff shared personal stories and read inspiring passages and poems. Among the speakers were David Acker, MD, chief of Obstetrics in BWH’s Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and Robert Insoft, MD, medical director of the NICU, who offered words of comfort to families and gratitude to BWH staff.
The Prone Family Foundation helped make this year’s service possible through a generous donation by Steve Prone, who heads the foundation. He is the husband of Carol Prone, RN, a nurse educator on CWN-7 and a member of the Bereavement Committee.
Attendees also watched a slideshow of photos and listened to the music of harpist Nancy Kleiman. Each family received a star on which they could write their child’s name, along with a message. They placed the stars on a blue felt board depicting the night sky during the ceremony.
In addition, attendees received rubber wrist bracelets commemorating Infant Loss Awareness Month, which is observed in October.
