Celebrating the holidays in the hospital is not easy for patients and their families. But sisters Angela and Dina Rezkalla got a little taste of home last week when BWH staff and other organizations provided guests of the Thornton and Naumes Mesothelioma House and the Patrick Thompson Suites with a complete Thanksgiving meal.
“It’s been a blessing,” said Angela Rezkalla, of South Carolina, who is staying at the house on Francis Street so she can support her dad Ben Rezkalla, while he undergoes cancer treatment. “With all that is going on, cooking was the last thing on our minds.”
Coordinated by BWH Social Work, the dinners are donated through the International Mesothelioma Program (IMP) and the Patrick Thompson House Patient/Family Fund for families of mesothelioma and oncology patients who stay across the street from their hospitalized loved ones.
This year, the IMP provided turkey and all the fixings, and guests were also treated to dessert courtesy of Boston Bruins player Greg Campbell. The Bruins’ community department delivered pies from Mike’s Pastries in the North End.
“It’s great to be able to help our patients’ families feel at home, especially at this time of year,” said Cristin O’Rourke, coordinator of the house.
