Selwyn O. Rogers Jr., MD, MPH, co-director, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and division chief of Trauma, Burns, and Surgical Critical Care, was named BWH's second Nesson Fellow.
The Nesson Fellow selection committee, which includes BWH President Gary Gottlieb and Chief Medical Officer Andy Whittemore, awards the two-year fellowship to a health care professional interested in policy and community health. The awardees embody the late Dr. H. Richard Nesson's trailblazing leadership, vision and life-long commitment to providing quality health care for everyone.
“This is a tremendous opportunity to make a real difference in health care, and I am extremely humbled to have been selected,” Rogers said.
The fellowship will allow Rogers to focus on the BWH Center for Surgery and Public Health, a joint effort with the hospital, HMS and Harvard School for Public Health. Rogers is director of the new center, and John Ayanian, MD, MPP, Brigham Internal Medicine Associates, is its medical director.
The center will study the intersection of surgery, public health and public policy. “We hope to revolutionize the process of the collection of surgical data and improve patient outcomes. We identified a significant void in the way Surgery collects patient data and maps it to outcomes, and that presented us with an opportunity and a responsibility to fill that void,” Rogers said.
