After two summers as part of the BWH Youth Summer Program, Rachelle Cenafils is set to begin this fall at the Becker College School of Nursing.
“Working here has been a great experience for me,” said Cenafils, who was one of 91 summer interns who worked in 41 departments throughout the hospital this summer. The Youth Summer Program concluded last week.
Cenafils, a graduate of Boston’s John D. O’Bryant High School, worked this summer in Interventional Radiology where she helped staff schedule procedures and even shadowed a patient care assistant throughout a procedure. “It was a great experience for anyone who would like to work in health care,” she said.
Lisa S. Ponton, JD, vice president of Human Resources for BWH, said, “This program is a great way to connect with our community and provide an opportunity for our neighboring teens to learn about, explore and develop their gifts and talents.”
BWH Workforce Development sponsors the summer program in conjunction with the Boston Private Industry Council. Student interns come to BWH from city high schools including O’Bryant and Madison Park, as well as Brookline High School, Windsor School, Health Careers Academy and the city’s ABCD Youth Program.
Beverley Sobers, manager of Workforce Development, thanked the many administrators and managers who hosted the student interns in their departments over the summer.
In addition, she urged the students to build upon the skills and learning experiences from this summer and cautioned them on their next challenge. “You need to stay focused and set goals, and you will achieve them,” she said.
Many graduates were set to return to school this fall, either high school or college, and three summer program graduates are joining BWH as part-time employees.
