BWH last week hosted a violence prevention seminar with a panel of experts from the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston Police Department, Boston EMS and other organizations.
“Violence and violence-related injuries are a major social and public health problem,” said Amado Alejandro Báez MD, associate director of Emergency Medical Services and attending physician in Emergency Medicine. “This seminar brought together a who’s who of violence prevention in Boston, and we were fortunate to have a multidisciplinary panel of world-renowned experts.”
The seminar offered the tools necessary to enhance the education of BWH’s clinical providers on the multiple implications of violence. “We hope that through this added knowledge, we can better care for not only the medical but also the social and personal needs of victims of violence,” Baez said.
The next step involves the development of a BWH violence prevention Web page with web-casts, downloads and tools, including a digital recording of the seminar. In addition, Baez is developing a Web-based survey on clinicians’ attitudes and perceptions when caring for victims of violence.
The panel and Web site are made possible by a grant BWH received from the Boston Public Health Commission for the project “Development of an Educational Strategy and Assessment Tool Directed to Improve Knowledge, Attitudes and Perceptions of Emergency Care Providers on Violence and Violent-Related Prevention Strategies.”
