The Delicious and Nutritious Food Choices at Work Program is a program designed by BWH’s Department of Nutrition, dietitians and members of Food Services to encourage healthier eating alternatives.
The ten-week pilot program is in its ninth week and coincides with the Nutrition Department’s Healthy Weight for Good Program available to BWH employees. The goal was to create healthier recipes and to highlight the existing healthier offerings that can easily be overlooked on the menu.
“Using a menu, the program identifies a healthy breakfast and two offerings of healthy meals for lunch and dinner,” said Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition.
McManus said to qualify as a “Delicious and Nutritious” food choice the foods need to be consistent with the Healthy Eating Pyramid developed by Dr. Walter Willet of BWH and Harvard School of Public Health.
“In general, the foods are high in fiber, low in saturated fat, contain no trans fat, low in refined sugars and starches and are moderate in calories,” McManus said.
So far the program has been a success. BWH employees are relaying positive feedback about the healthier food choices. McManus said according to a recent survey on the program, customers are in favor of having the Cafeteria continue with the program.
“Particular items that are most popular include vegetarian entrees, turkey burgers, flaked tuna, whole wheat bread and tofu salad,” said McManus.
If you want to learn more about the program, stop by the cafeteria at lunch next Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Dietitians and dietetic interns will be available at an educational booth describing the Healthy Eating Pyramid along with the foods that are consistent with the healthy eating guidelines. Ideas about how to make your holidays healthier along with nutritious and delicious recipes will be available.
