Mark Kostegan has assumed the role of chief development officer in BWH’s Department of Development, replacing outgoing chief Joan Hadly. This transition is the final piece of a planned succession initiated last January when Kostegan joined BWH as deputy chief development officer.
During the past ten months of transition, Kostegan and Hadly have worked together to dramatically advance BWH’s $200-million capital campaign, “Great Medicine in the Making,” which is expected to end successfully and ahead of schedule in 2004. Kostegan has also engaged hospital trustees and donors in discussions about the formation of a Philanthropy Board, which will function in concert with the Board of Trustees, to augment charitable giving and to align fundraising needs with the strategic plan of Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospitals. A 25-year veteran of fundraising, Kostegan served as vice president of Development for three other Harvard teaching hospitals prior to his arrival at BWH: Mass Eye & Ear Infirmary, Children’s Hospital and the Joslin Diabetes Center.
During Hadly’s seven-year tenure as chief development officer, she raised more than $200 million. Over the years, Hadly has worked to build BWH's fundraising program from $7 million in 1996 to an impressive $57 million in FY 03. Highlights of her tenure include launching BWH’s largest capital campaign to date; beginning the annual Heritage Society event to recognize and thank major donors, who play a pivotal role in advancing BWH’s mission; and establishing an annual major fundraising program in Palm Beach, Florida. Hadly will serve as senior counsel for the Department of Development in the next several months.
