Feany Receives Senior Scholar Award
Mel Feany, MD, PhD, Pathology, in August received the Senior Scholar Award from the Ellison Medical Foundation. The award supports investigators conducting research to better understand the aging process and age-related diseases and disabilities. Scholars are provided with four years of support to develop new, creative research programs.
Feany’s research focuses on making and modeling neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease in the drosophila organism. The short, 60-day lifespan of the drosophila allows researchers to understand the age dependency of these diseases. She hopes to apply results from these studies to humans to analyze the neurological paths involved in cell death.
