Smirnakis Receives HHMI Early Career Award
Stelios M. Smirnakis, MD, PhD, of Neurology, received the Physician-Scientist Early Career Award from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). He was one of 13 recipients of this award, which provides $150,000 over three years to physician-scientists pursuing research in their early years as tenure-track faculty at academic medical centers.
Smirnakis’ research focuses on neuroplasticity and electrophysiology as he observes how carefully controlled lesions introduced into the nervous system affect surrounding neurons and nerve tissue.
