Mishel Burgos and Mazie Anckle, RN, this month were honored with the second annual Hispanic Heritage Award established by Patient Care Services and the Department of Nursing to celebrate the contributions of staff from Hispanic and Latino backgrounds.
“Both Mishel and Mazie represent the best of who we are, the best of what we try to be and our commitment to our patients,” BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, said during the celebration in Carrie Hall. “Thank you for sharing your great talent and your commitment with all of us, our patients and their families.”
The awards were presented during a ceremony that also featured guest speaker State Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez (D-Jamaica Plain) who spoke about growing up in the Mission Hill neighborhood and his Puerto Rican heritage. He also thanked the staff from Hispanic and Latino backgrounds for their work.
“The dedication and cultural understanding you bring to your job is remarkable,” Sanchez said. “You bring peace of mind to those who need it the most in our community.”
Burgos, an administrative assistant and insurance coordinator in Cardiac Surgery, was recognized for her commitment to excellence during her 11 years at BWH.
“What I like about my job is making a difference in someone’s life every day,” said Burgos, who moved to Boston from Puerto Rico at age 12. “I also enjoy the great team work in Cardiac Surgery, where everybody respects and admires each other.”
Anckle, a native of Honduras, is a nurse at Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center. She was honored to be selected among so many other dedicated care providers.
“Being able to educate, care for and communicate with patients in their own language is rewarding for me, as are their expressions of satisfaction and gratitude,” said Anckle, a registered nurse for 28 years. “It’s also a pleasure working with staff who are caring and supportive.”
