BWH mourns the loss of Sharon Kay Flynn, RN, a post-transplant nurse coordinator for kidney transplant patients, who passed away Aug. 13. She was 62.
Ms. Flynn had worked at BWH for more than 20 years in Day Surgery, Gynecology/Oncology, and most recently, Transplant Surgery. Her colleagues remember her joyful spirit, good natured demeanor and ever-present smile.
“She loved to interact with patients and always took the time to truly listen,” said Rita Calden, RN, transplant coordinator, who worked with Ms. Flynn for many years. “She had this very gentle way about her and boundless patience.”
Ms. Flynn, who lived in Quincy, was born in Olean, New York, and graduated from St. Joseph’s Nursing School in Elmira, New York.
In addition to her love of nursing, Ms. Flynn enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She adored her many great nieces and nephews and frequently shared stories about them with her colleagues at BWH.
“She was well-liked and had many friends at the Brigham,” said Joan Compagnone, RN, of Day Surgery, who worked with Ms. Flynn for many years. “She could converse with patients and colleagues about many subjects.”
Ms. Flynn loved music, the arts, football and traveling, especially to warm, sunny destinations in the winter. “We used to travel together a lot,” said Compagnone. “We visited Barbados, the Caribbean, Charleston and Florida. You always had a good laugh and a good time when you were with Sharon—she was a great friend.”
Ms. Flynn is survived by her sister Patricia and brother-in-law John Donohue and several nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated in August at St. Agatha’s Church in Milton, followed by burial at the Great Neck Woods Cemetery in Mashpee.
