At left, Lee Hunsaker, front, and other United Way ambassadors listen as Bob Donaghue, right, details what's in store for BWH's 2009 United Way campaign.
In a simulation exercise hosted by the United Way, BWH staff learned first hand about the current struggles of families living on the brink of poverty. David McCready, executive administrator of the Department of Medicine, played a disabled father of four who worked with his family to get to the bank, buy groceries, deal with health care issues and put children through school on a limited budget.
“For me, the poverty simulation experience really brought home why we raise money for the United Way each year,” said McCready, co-chair for BWH’s United Way Campaign this year.
In difficult economic times, programs that help families and organizations pay for basic necessities like food and oil are more important than ever. The United Way of Massachusetts Bay has placed a renewed effort on basic needs, in addition to programs for sustainable employment, affordable housing and youth opportunities.
BWH’s two-week campaign to raise funds for the United Way is Oct. 16 to 30. Last year, the hospital reached an all-time high, raising more than $140,000. The bar is set even higher this year.
“I want us to beat last year’s total and also increase employee participation,” said United Way co-chair Bob Donaghue, operations manager for Security and Parking. “The cause is close to home, as the United Way serves many of our patients and employees and those who live in our neighborhood.”
Giving is easy.
Employees will receive direct, personalized e-mails with a link to their own giving page, simplifying online donations through payroll deduction, credit card or check. Employees who opt out will not receive additional e-mails, and employees who donate through the online mechanism will not receive any follow-up e-mails. Printed pledge cards also will be available throughout the campaign for those who do not use e-mail.
As always, the campaign will be infused with chances to win fantastic raffle items, such as a new bicycle, parking spots, Bruins and Celtics tickets, gift cards and much more. Donors’ names automatically are entered into the raffle drawings.
Don’t miss the BWH United Way rolling rally cart, sure to pop up in an area near you. Visit the booth for information on donating.
