Barbara Gottlieb, MD, MPH, right, this year’s Massachusetts League of Community Health Center's Physician of the Year Award, talks to Ben Sommers, MD, PhD.
This month, Gottlieb received the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers’ Physician of the Year Award at a banquet June 5 in honor of her dedication and commitment to caring for each of her patients with compassion and respect.
“This is such a well-deserved recognition for Dr. Gottlieb who, for three decades, has delivered remarkable patient care with a real passion and empathy,” said Robert Hartley, MD, medical director at Brookside.
An advocate for social issues, Gottlieb provides care for the vulnerable and less fortunate, whether it is in the neighborhood or working side by side with local health promoters in remote villages in Guatemala, which she has done for the past 10 years. She also finds time to run the Boston Marathon with Team Brigham.
At Brookside, she was a force behind the Teen Health Center creation, a school-based clinic that serves students at Boston English High School. Gottlieb also advocates for bringing medical students, clinical residents and public health students into the community setting.
“If we don’t play a role in training the next generation, there may not be a next generation of providers who are motivated to work in community settings,” Gottlieb said. “I want the new generation of physicians to see and experience how great it is to work here. Hopefully it will spark their interest.”
