Francesca Gomes has a keen eye for detail. Not only does she make sure her assignments on Tower 5A Oncology are met, the unit associate often goes the extra mile to make a fresh pot of coffee available for patients and their relatives. When families are distressed, she quickly retrieves tissues, and she frequently adjusts her routine to avoid disturbing patients’ morning sleep.
For her compassion, care, advocacy and respect, Gomes was one of nine BWHers recently honored with Starfish Awards during a ceremony that drew tears and laughter as each recipient’s story was told.
“Whenever you acknowledge how wonderful Francesca is, she shrugs it off and says she is fortunate to be in the position to help,” said Maureen Conley-Rogazzo, RN, of Tower 5A, who nominated Gomes for the award.
Kim Ternavan, MS, MBA, RN, nurse manager on Tower 7AB, thanked all of the recipients and nominators. “Thank you for going above and beyond the call of duty,” she said. “The Starfish Award is one way that we can honor you.”
