Two BWH nurses are reaching new heights in 2009. Susan Gabriel, RN, of Shapiro 6, and Ellen Clemence, RN, nurse manager of Tower 10BA, are joining Gabriel’s twin sister Sarah Doherty and her partner Kerith Perreur-Lloyd to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Doherty, who lost her right leg at age 13 when struck by a drunk driver, is the first person on crutches to attempt to climb Africa’s highest peak without the use of an artificial limb. She developed SideStix, the first shock absorbent sports crutch with attachable “feet,” which she will test on the climb.
The four will blog about their adventure beginning Jan. 6 as they climb through five ecological zones, starting near the equator and ending in the arctic as they approach Kilimanjaro’s summit. Follow along at www.sidestix.blogspot.com and watch for a detailed story in an upcoming issue of BWH Bulletin.
