Barry Wante last month was named director of Emergency Management. In this position, he has an expanded role in emergency preparedness for BWH and will coordinate the Center for Emergency Preparedness among BWH, Faulkner Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to formulate shared emergency response plans in case of a disaster.
“This position gives me the opportunity to work with emergency leaders from both institutions and share resources and exercises that will benefit us all,” Wante, who has served as program manager for BWH Emergency Preparedness since 2007, said.
Both Faulkner Hospital and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute will continue to have individual emergency preparedness programs, but Wante will serve as a leader in formulating the shared emergency plan.
“In recent years, emergency preparedness has become a crucial component of our institutions,” Wante said. “Not only because of the Joint Commission standards, but because it’s the right thing to do. We need to be prepared for an emergency.”
Wante will continue to be responsible for all emergency preparedness and management programs at BWH, which each year successfully educate staff about their role and responsibilities during an emergency.
Before joining BWH, Wante was the branch chief of Homeland Security and Regional Services for the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) and prior to that, he served with the City of Keene, N.H., Police Department for 23 years, retiring as police chief in 2002.
Wante is certified as an emergency manager and holds a bachelor’s degree from St. Anselm College and an MBA from Plymouth State College.
