Bonventre, Schoen Named Directors of BWH-BRI Technology in Medicine Initiative
Joseph Bonventre, MD, PhD, and Frederick Schoen, MD, PhD, in February were appointed directors for the newly established BWH Biomedical Research Institute Technology in Medicine Initiative and the new BWH Site Miners for the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT). They join site miners from ten other participating local institutions, including MGH, Children’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Bonventre and Schoen are forming a multidisciplinary BWH-based medical innovation steering committee to develop and implement a strategic plan for discovery and innovation, as well as to better integrate technology and medicine into the culture of BWH. The BRI Technology in Medicine Initiative will encompass the work of the CIMIT site miner with the goal of formalizing the integration of site miners into the BRI and maximizing the cross talk with the BRI centers.
CIMIT’s mission is to improve patient care by bringing scientists, engineers and clinicians together to catalyze development of innovative technology, emphasizing minimally invasive diagnosis and therapy.
Bonventre is the Robert H. Ebert Professor of Medicine and Health Sciences and Technology, director of the Renal Division in the Department of Medicine and co-director of the BRI Stem Cell, Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering Center. Schoen is director of Cardiac Pathology, executive vice-chairman of the Department of Pathology and professor of Pathology and Health Sciences and Technology at HMS.
