Over the last decade, BWH has collaborated with the Private Industry Council (PIC) and more recently with other community programs, to provide Boston youth with part-time summer employment assigning students to numerous positions throughout the hospital.
This summer, BWH’s 2003 Summer Youth Program expanded by more than 25 percent to employ a total of 121 students. Half of these students were pre-selected from PIC and Boston community programs, including Boston Public Schools.
According to Beverley Sobers, manager, Workforce Development at BWH, the student participants selected by the Boston Public Schools have the opportunity to attend MCAS classes in the morning and then work part-time in the afternoon at BWH. All program participants are granted the opportunity of being exposed to health careers and developing their interpersonal skills.
For example, Tashalee Rodriguez, a second year student at Bryman Institute pursuing her goal to become a medical assistant, is working in the Pediatric Women’s Health departments at the Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center (SJPHC). “In addition to developing my skills and expanding my knowledge in the health care field, this experience at SJPHC has increased my comfort level when interacting with patients, families and people in general,” said Rodriguez.
The Summer Youth Program is funded through BWH Human Resources and available at no cost to departments. According to Sobers, the only requirement is a departmental commitment to provide a meaningful work experience in a supportive environment.
Supervisors, who are interested in taking on student(s) during the summer of 2004, should contact Sobers at 617-525-3112.
