After a 21-year tenure marked with outstanding accomplishment, Margy Hanson stepped down as senior vice president for Network Development at BWH on July 31.
“Margy’s many contributions and tireless commitment to Brigham and Women’s/Faulkner Hospitals is visible in its success over the years. She has made extraordinary contributions to this institution and its patients, and we all wish her well in her new endeavors,” said Gary L. Gottlieb, MD, MBA, president, BWH.
Some of Hanson’s signature accomplishments include her vital role in the merger of BWH and Faulkner Hospitals, in which she was responsible for identifying and implementing growth strategies; providing the opportunity for BWH to relocate secondary care to Faulkner; and creating additional tertiary care capacity at BWH.
Prior to her promotion to senior vice president, Hanson created the vision and led the implementation of the tertiary backfill strategy at BWH through community hospital partnerships. This included the development of the BWH Cardiac Surgery Program at Cape Cod Hospital and multiple BWH specialty programs at South Shore, Metro West and Faulkner Hospitals. In addition, Hanson led the effort in forging BWH's relationships with community hospitals and physicians. Her efforts supported the delivery of secondary specialty care at community hospital sites.
Hanson’s impact is also evident in the hospital’s first Women’s Health Service Line and BWH’s representation in the Partners HealthCare Systems network and specialty planning. She was also responsible for BWH Community Benefit Programs including a $4 million infant mortality initiative, six health centers, senior meals, school health, home visiting and food bank programs. In addition, Hanson was instrumental in implementing the contract between Boston's largest HMO (Harvard Community Health Plan) and BWH.
