Earlier this fall, the Social Work Department celebrated the 100th anniversary of Social Work at BWH with a special dinner.
Addressing BWH social workers, Jackie Somerville, PhD, RN, chief nursing officer and senior vice president of Patient Care Services, said: “As social workers, you have chosen a profession that places you in the midst of human experiences that are often at the extremes of emotion and challenge. You’ve chosen not to stand idly by but to stand ready for action and ready to help.”
Today, the hospital’s social workers are embedded as integral members of care teams across BWH. At the Sept. 18 dinner, Social Work Director Martha Burke, MSW, ACSW, LICSW, saluted her staff for their dedication to the hospital’s patients and families.
“As ‘Brigham strong’ social workers you have inherited and have helped build upon this great social work profession,” Burke said.
She encouraged her colleagues “to be change agents not only with our patients and their families but your profession and yourselves. Be the guardians of our rich legacy.”
Carol Trust, executive director of the National Association of Social Workers’ Massachusetts Chapter, presented a proclamation signed by Boston Mayor Martin Walsh declaring Sept. 18 “BWH Social Work Day.”
