For the first time, the Dennis Thomson Leadership Award and the Thomson Compassionate Care Scholarships were all presented at one event, celebrating the legacy of the late vice president of Public Affairs and recognizing the work of BWH caregivers that carry it on. “This continues to be a wonderful legacy and a lasting testament to the values of a remarkable man. Tonight's event reminds us of the important opportunities we can each use to reinforce the concepts of compassion and leadership and to truly understand that they are intertwined,” BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA as he welcomed the proud colleagues, family members and friends of the recipients of these important awards that packed Carrie Hall on Tuesday evening.
The Gift of Leadership“I think of Dennis’ mentorship as a gift that those of us who were fortunate enough to work with him, strive to pass on to others,” said Matt Van Vranken, chief operating officer and former colleague of Thomson, before introducing the fourth recipient of the Thomson Leadership Award, Paula McNichols, executive director of Brookside Community Health Center (BCHC). “We are very proud of Paula’s leadership at this institution, and I’m certain Dennis would be too.”
As the recipient of this distinguished award at BWH, McNichols is the epitome of character, composure, commitment, courage, coaching and competency, and serves as a role model for how to superbly care for people.
As Van Vranken explained, McNichols began working at BCHC in 1972 and became executive director in 1990. She is a strong patient advocate in Boston as well as on the national scene, and is highly regarded by her peers and staff. McNichols’ stellar leadership ability most recently stood out during BCHC’s $5.4 million, 22-month renovation project. The official unveiling of the renovations will take place later this month.
“I am accepting this on behalf of all staff at Brookside and our accomplishments over the last 30 years,” said McNichols at the podium after receiving the esteemed award.
Also part of the evening’s program was guest speaker David Eisenberg, MD, director of the Osher Institute at HMS, who spoke on his suggested compassionate approach to discussing complementary and integrative medicine with patients.
The celebration continued as those in attendance moved on to a reception in the PBB-Rotunda following the program.
