BWH Played Part in Grooming Current FDA Commissioner
Several years ago, Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, could be found providing quality patient care as a resident at BWH. Today, he represents the needs of the American people each and every day as Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). McClellan, who earned his medical degree from Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and his doctorate degree in Economics from MIT, completed his intern and residency training at BWH.
“I was always very impressed by Mark,” said Joel Katz, MD, who served as McClellan’s resident during his time as an intern at BWH. “He exhibited great passion and always focused on the needs of his patients and colleagues. Little did I know he was so accomplished in economic research as well. To me, he was a terrific doctor.”
At the time of his appointment to FDA Commissioner, McClellan served as a member of the President's Council on Economic Advisors and also as a senior policy director for health care and related economic issues for the White House. Previously, McClellan held two associate professorships at Stanford University, one in Economics and the other in Medicine, as well as several national research positions.
“Mark McClellan is a excellent physician, an amazingly high-quality researcher, and a terrific person,” said Thomas Lee, MD, who also worked with McClellan during his time at BWH. “The FDA is fortunate to have someone like him for the job.”
