BWH last month mourned the death of Arthur R. Kravitz, MD, a highly respected psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and teacher for more than 30 years. Kravitz, 76, well known as a gifted listener and dedicated Red Sox fan, died Feb. 16 in his Newton home after a long battle with cancer.
“He was a masterful teacher, for three decades teaching and supervising BWH Psychiatry and Primary Care faculty and trainees,” said Jonathan F. Borus, MD, BW/F chief of Psychiatry. “One of the gifts I could offer young faculty was the privilege of being supervised by, and learning from, the master, Art Kravitz.”
Kravitz is survived by his wife, Barbara, two sons and four grandchildren.
Kravitz's legacy is sure to endure at BWH and HMS through his decades of teaching as well as his generosity. Last year he endowed a fund to offer an annual teaching award in his name to honor the teaching of psychiatry to medical students, residents, fellows, and non-psychiatric physicians by others in BW/F Department of Psychiatry. The first recipient will be announced in April. He also founded the Lily Kravitz Award, established in honor of his mother, to promote nursing research. 2004 marked the 10th year that the award recognized BWH nurses and supported their proposed research projects.
