John A. Mannick, MD, surgeon-in-chief emeritus and Moseley Distinguished Professor of Surgery, received the Society of University Surgeons first-ever lifetime achievement award on Feb. 10.
“I'm surprised and thrilled,” said Mannick, who first came to BWH in 1976.
Dr. Timothy Eberlein, chairman of the Department of Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, presented Mannick with the award. Eberlein trained at BWH when Mannick was surgeon-in-chief. Pointing to Mannick's career-long research in immunology, Eberlein said “There is no better example of an academic surgeon and no better role model as a person.”
The Society of University Surgeons was established in 1938 to advance the art and science of surgery by encouraging members to pursue original investigations in the clinic and laboratory, to develop graduate teaching methods of surgery specifically for residents, and to lead public policies related to surgery.
