The symposium “Unmet Health Needs of Boston, the Nation and the World: BWH’s Role in the Search for Solutions” was held on Friday, March 2. Sponsored by the Academic Subcommittee of BWH’s Diversity Leadership Committee, and organized by Robert Handin, MD, executive vice chairman, Department of Medicine and chair of the Academic Subcommittee, the symposium focused on health care needs and disparities, and how BWH is positioning itself to provide leadership for these problems in areas of research, teaching and provision of care. An introduction by Edgar Milford, MD, began the symposium. Presenters included Howard Hiatt, MD, who spoke on local, national and international challenges for academic medicine; Judyann Bigby, MD, who discussed the disparities in health care access for women in Boston; Jennifer Furin, MD, who gave a powerful presentation on tuberculosis and multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis in Peru and the Soviet Union; Serena Koenig, MD, who spoke on the Global Health Leadership Fellowship; John Ayanian, MD, who discussed disparities in organ transplant access and Milford, who presented on the ramifications of racial classifications in health care. The symposium concluded with a question-and-answer session with the audience. Topics for future lectures in this series are still being considered, and suggestions are welcome.
