Pike Notes
Welton Evans Every morning, service mechanic Welton Evans makes his rounds. He visits his assigned hospital floors, greeting everyone he encounters with “Good morning” or “I hope you have a nice day.” He makes note of what small repairs needs to be done—from changing light bulbs to bathroom problems to hanging pictures—and makes sure they’re taken care of immediately. It is his combination of skilled efficient work and warm courtesy that makes him the first Service Hero of 2001. “In my eyes, Welton’s the kind of employee who always goes above and beyond,” said Wally Gleeson, service mechanics supervisor in the Engineering Department. “The people he works with on the floors love him. I’ve received a lot of positive calls regarding the work he does, which are always nice to hear. He’s just an all-around great guy.” Evans has worked in the Engineering Department for two years. He transferred from the Houskeeping Department, where he worked doing similar repairs for over 26 years. “My mother-in-law used to be a cook at the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, and she helped me get a job here,” said Evans. “Before I came here, I worked at the same job for seven years. After I started working here, I said to myself, ‘Why did I put seven years there when I should have been at BWH?’” “Welton has been a welcome addition to the department,” said George Player, director, Engineering Department. “This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard good things from people in the hospital about him. In a department like ours, it’s easy to see the things we miss on certain days, so it’s great when you get a compliment on an employee who’s been working really hard and deserves it. Welton has a great attitude. We’re really proud of people like him and service mechanic Manny Perry, who became a Service Hero in August 1998.” “Everyone has been so nice to me, especially Wally and George,” added Evans. “They make me feel proud about the work I do at BWH.”
