Hospitals never close. While other businesses in the City of Boston and throughout Massachusetts were closed on Monday and Tuesday due to a late winter snowstorm, BW''s doors remained opened.
Various departments and hundreds of individuals throughout the hospital rallied as a team to make certain our patients' needs were met. In fact, many dedicated employees used BWH as a makeshift home, spending the night on Monday so they were able to care for patients on Tuesday.
"What separates a hospital like BWH from others is the exceptional dedication of its staff and employees to provide the highest quality and most compassionate care available. That dedication and commitment has been abundantly clear over the course of the storm as people throughout this organization came together under difficult circumstances to sustain top quality care for our patients," said Matt Van Vranken, chief operating officer. After BWH declared a Severe Weather Emergency, the policy went into effect and supervisors and managers were required to provide a list of essential personnel by 4 p.m. on Monday. The hospital then put systems in place to ensure those employees could get into work and provided sleeping quarters and amenities to those who had to spend the night.
